A form of local government

Link between the municipalities and the Flemish and federal government

The provincial government is a form of local government. It is the link between the municipalities and the Flemish and federal government. The provincial council occupies itself specifically with subjects that concern the province. It is involved both with the development of the strategy and vision as well as with providing support for developing the plans of others. The province manages cooperative relationships and efforts and funds important projects. The subjects are very diverse but have one thing in common:love for the region.

Some examples

  • A few years ago, Flemish Brabant was a pioneer in the field of health care with its breast cancer screening centre on wheels (the "mammobiel"). This initiative was subsequently adopted in other Flemish regions as well as in the Netherlands. More recently, Flemish Brabant scored again with the digital health and welfare plan that it developed in cooperation with various players in the field of home care services.
  • Our province may be the smallest Flemish province in terms of surface area but we have big ambitions. Our administration has the considerable task of developing optimum (spatial) plans and combining the high economic activity with a high-quality life and affordable housing, greater mobility and concern for the environment.
  • Our government translates the Flemish or federal projects on road safety and mobility to our region. An example of this is the mixed financing programme for bicycle tracks where the province doubles every Flemish euro invested. Under this programme, more than 100 km of bicycle tracks have been laid over the past years.
  • The Pajottenland is not the Hageland, and vice versa. That is why our government initiates region-oriented projects which optimally meet the local needs. Pajottenland+ generates several positive initiatives (and European resources) for the Pajottenland, PORT addresses the housing problem in the larger area around Tienen.

Policy areas

It is clear that the provincial government covers virtually all policy areas. Just think of culture, education, youth, sport, tourism, recreation, Flemish character, economy, agriculture, environment, European projects, welfare, health, minorities, development cooperation, housing and regional zoning policy, equal opportunities, provincial domains, provincial schools, water policy, mobility and roads, spatial planning, school for administrative studies, police training academy, fire fighting training school, school for emergency medicine...
